What are Lemo Connectors?

Lemo is the name of a fiber-optic connector company located in Switzerland. It is derived from the company’s founder Leon Mouttet, who was an engineer and conducted significant research on the link between rare metals and noble gases. Repairing Broken Cables

  • On the end that you cut, push the mesh back until you reach where the outer insulation still remains on the cable. Inside the foil insulation, there will be two twisted wires on top of four more pairs of twisted wires. Take the two wires that are on top and untwist them. Strip approximately ½ inch of insulation off of the ends of each wire using wire strippers.
  • Attach the ends of these wires to the slots in a Lemo connector.
  • Repeat steps one through four to expose the wires of the cable you are going to connect to.
  • Take the four other pairs of wires in the cable and untwist them. Using the wire strippers, strip about a ½ inch of insulation off the ends of each wire.
  • Attach the four pairs of wires in the cable to the Lemo connector.
  • Replace the foil back of the cables and replace the wire mesh so that it covers both the connector and the wires.
  • Wrap electrical tape over the repair.

Tools

Although there are many uses for Lemo connectors, repairing broken cables with Lemo connectors is one of the most widely used applications. As you can see from the above steps, it is not a very complicated process. However, you will need specific tools to help you complete the task. Be sure you have assembled all tools prior to undertaking the job of repairing your cable so you can finish quickly and without needing to run back and forth to your garage.

  • Mini C-clamp
  • Crimper

The steps for repairing a broken coax cable are similar to the process for other kinds of cables; however, you will need to solder the Lemo connector in place. While you can do it on your own, repairing broken cables with Lemo connectors may be best left to the professionals for safety reasons.
